RATING

An evocative woodblock print by Kawasa Hasui of Gokokuji Temple.  The Temple was built in 1681 by Tsunayoshi, the fifth Tokugawa shogun, at the request of his mother, Keishoin.  Hasui has masterfully depicted the spring rain at the gates of the temple as worshippers shelter under traditional oil-paper umbrellas beside the vermilion-lacquered gate.  Hasui is regarded as a major Japanese landscape artist of the 20th century.  His works are characterized by their serenity of mood as well as their flawless composition.

All of his prints are signed Hasui and use a variety of red seals reading “sui.” Though Watanabe published the majority of Hasui Kawase’s prints, Doi, Kawaguchi, Sakai and others published some designs as well.

This print is a later edition from the original woodblocks and published by Eiichi Doi.

The approximate dimensions of the sheet are 39 cm width and 27 cm height.

Hasui KAWASE 1883-1957 Living National Treasure

One of the most renowed artists of the Shin Hanga movement Hasui is famous for his landscapes and town views in traditional Japanese style as well as Western elements. Hasui was declared a Living National Treasure in 1956, one year before his passing.

All his woodblocks and over 200 sketches were lost during the earthquake of 1923. The works that predate this event are extremely scarce and in great demand today.
