A hand painted Scroll by Hoashi Kyou (1810 to 1884) depicting Plum and Pine branches in an Ikebana  Vase. Estimated to be from the 1840s.  Hand painted ink on silk with washi backing and in good overall condition.  As a 190 year old scroll there are some some signs of wear.  There is also a very small piece of silk brocade missing at the top right (see images).

Signed by Kyou in brush and ink at the top right of the image as Kyou-u.

Karaki wood has been used for the upper crosspiece (hyoumoku) as well as the roller (jiku).  The (heri) mounting is silk and the silk brocade strips across the top as well as bottom of the artwork are called ichimoji.  The scroll backing is washi and is traditionally used in all scrolls.

Approximate dimensions: 137 cms length  and 38 cm wide and the wooden roller is 43 cm.

This item will be carefully rolled and packed for shipping in a tube. Shipping is via Australia Post and includes tracking and signature on delivery.

Kyo’u was born in Oita prefecture and studied Nan-ga, Southern school of Chinese art under Chikuden Tanomura and Syunnkin Uragami and established his own style of painting.
