RATING

A very compelling and extremely rare Black Antique Noh Theatre Mask signed Masanao of Ise.  Beautifully hand carved from a solid piece of Cherry wood and detailed in multiple layers of black Urushi lacquer. The artists signature is carved on the verso.  Please see photo 8.  The Mask is estimated to have been carved during the mid to late Meiji Era 1880s and ships with a custom made Museum Quality carbonized steel stand.

Noh and Kyogen Masks were worn in Japanese Theatre performances as well as ritual Shinto Kagura dances.  Hannya masks portray sad and tormented women who have become emotionally demonic due to obsession and jealousy.

The fearful visual element is a representation of the internal state of anguish and suffering the souls are experiencing.  And with the performance, a display of the fragile complexity of human emotions.

The mask is in excellent condition for it’s age and has no cracks, warping or chips.  There are minor signs of age wear and use in this Antique and utilitarian stage performance item.

The approximate Dimensions of Mask are 25 cm height and 17 cm width and 588 grams weight.  The height with the Custom Hand Made Museum Stand is 31 cm. Full weight with stand is 1.420 kg.
