An Antique late 1800s signed Japanese Black Okina Mask of Kokushiki-jō.  This Okina Mask has been finely hand carved from a single piece of wood most likely Cypress.

Kokushiki-jō is believed to be the first mask created in Japan and has been a part of celebrations since the first Noh plays.  It has similar appearance to Hakushiki-jō with smiling eyes, swirling wrinkles on the cheeks, and hinged lower jaw.  The Kokushiki-jō mask is usually smaller than Hakushiki-jō and painted black. It is popular for use in prayers for Japan and world peace, as well as bountiful harvests.
