1940s Japanese Scroll Toy Puppet

$785.00

This is an early Showa Era 1920s to 1940s Japanese Scroll depicting a traditional Toy Puppet on a Bamboo stick. The scroll is painted on a thick hand made Washi and signed by an unknown artist.  The signature and seal of the artist can be seen at the top right of the artwork.

The upper crosspiece Hyoumoku is of Karaki wood as is the lower crosspiece Jiku which is decorated with plain black Urushi lacquer ends. The scroll backing is of hand made washi.

The scroll is in overall good to very good structural condition as is the illustration Honshi. There is a small tear on the top left of the scroll just below the upper crosspiece and there are wrinkles and some minor foxing and toning.  This is usual for antique scrolls due to age storage and use. (please see photos).

The centrepiece of this scroll would make quite a unique visual statement and would be ideal to frame and mount.

Approximate dimensions are 193 cm in length and 42 cm width.  Length of roller 45.6 cm.

This item will be carefully rolled and packed for shipping in a tube. Shipping is via Australia Post and includes tracking and signature on delivery.
