An original and very rare matching pair of early 1820s, Edo period Toyokuni III diptych woodblock prints.
Toyokuni III, also known as Kunisada I is depicting here two actors performing the Kabuki play Modori Kago by Ichikawa Hakuen. Danjuro as Naniwa no Jirosaku is on the right and Onoe Kikugoro as Azuma no Yosakuro is on the left. The seals on both prints confirm this work as having been printed between Bunka 12th and Tenpo 13th year, c1820s. A striking, dramatic and evocative pair of woodblock prints.
Both prints are in very good condition for their significant, two hundred and twenty plus years of age. There are superficial signs of wear, dirt, smudges and toning which are normal for works on paper of this age.
Approximate dimensions of each sheet is Ooban size, 36.5 cm height by 24.5 cm width.
