Sofu Matsuno Original 1937 Woodblock Hagoromo

A rare and original 1937 woodblock print by Sofu Matsuno on hand made washi.  From a series titled “Noga Taikan” depicting a Noh play for each of the twelve months of the year. This print is from the play Hagoromo, Robe of Feathers. The female mask named Zoonna is intended to portray the divine and supernatural character. Signed Sofu with the artist’s seal lower right. Very good sharpness and colour and will frame and present extremely well.

In good overall condition with minor foxing and spotting.  Top edge showing some damage from having been detached from backing (please see images).

Approximate dimensions of the woodblock print are width 35.5 cm and height 24 cm.

Matsuno Sofu 1899-1963

Matsuno Sofu studied with Tsuikoika Kogyo famous for his depictions of Noh plays. After his passing Sofu Matsuno completed his his last series of 24 prints “Noga taikan,” to finish the fifth and final volume of the series.
