Original 1881 Chikanobu Triptych Noh Play

$898.00

A wonderful original 1881 Triptych woodblock print of a Noh Play by Chikanobu depicting the opening of the Kyoykan Theatre in 1881 Chikanobu (1838 – 1912). The artist offers a glimpse into his masterful technique and transports you to a pivotal moment in history. Imagine the air of excitement at the Kyoykan Theatre in 1881 where the Meiji Emperor and Empress attended by their ladies in waiting dressed in colourful robes are attending a performance of Noh Theatre.  Seated on a pair of elegant red plush armchairs and a table of refreshments their ladies in waiting surround them.

Onstage, actors appear in the roles of the elderly couple Jo and Uba, who are the spirits of the paired pine trees, Takasago and Suminoe, in the classic Noh play Takasago. Musicians line the back of the stage.

Intricately rendered with meticulous attention to detail, the woodblock print exudes a sense of timelessness. Its condition preserves the vibrancy of colours and the crispness of lines that Chikanobu intended.  As a testament to its authenticity and age, some toning and thinning grace its surface, as whispers of history itself.

The approximate dimensions of each Oban print are:

Paper size –  37 cm height and 25.5 cm width.

Print size – 36 cm height and 24 cm width.
