This is a late Edo to Meiji era Antique Scroll Painting of Sugawara no Michizane (Heian Period AD 845 – AD 903). Hand painted between 1850 and 1890s.   Sugawara no Michizane was a dynamic highly regarded scholar, poet and politician with advanced skills in Chinese poetry.

Originally part of a Japanese Kakejiku (hanging scroll) the artwork is showing signs of age and storage with foxing and toning (please see images).

Approximate dimensions are 96 cm length and 58 cm width.

This item will be carefully rolled and packed for shipping in a tube.  Shipping is via Australia Post and includes tracking and signature on delivery.

Sugawara no Michizane (AD 845 – 903)

Sugawara no Michizane’s predecessors served in the Imperial Court and also taught history in the National School for future bureaucrats. Sugawara graduated at the Daigaku (national school) and began a court career as a scholar and government official. He was appointed to diplomatic roles and ran the school his father founded and was also appointed Monjo Hakushi, the highest professorial office at Daigaku. This office was considered to be the highest honor a historian could achieve.

After his death the Imperial Court built and dedicated a Shinto shrine called Kitano Tenmangu in Kyoto to him. The I also posthumously restored his title and office and removed any mention of his exile. He also influenced Emperor Uda’s decision to stop the practice of sending ambassadors to China.
