A stunning and beautifully handcrafted three case Inro from the early to mid Edo era (1770 -1840s).
A rare and very early Inro example with intricately detailed Urushi lacquer with raised Gold leaf inlay and Gold Maki-e. Very few early Inro multi case Inro show such finely detailed techniques of Wajima nuri and Takamaki-e raised lacquer. In this case to illustrate a Tiger hunting deer in a bamboo forest on one side and a flying coiled Dragon emerging from within Heavenly Clouds of Gold leaf on the verso. Included with this Inro is a beautifully hand carved Wooden Netsuke of three eggplants symbolising happiness and prosperity.
The interior is finished in “Pear Skin” Nashiji-ko gold flakes. This Inro represents the very early use of these decorative techniques rarely seen in pre Meiji Era Antique objects. There is wear and some loss to the raised Gold detail from age and daily use from this Inro’s Samurai owner which greatly adds to the atmosphere of this magnificent early and rare example.
