A very striking and solid early to mid 20th Century Japanese Bronze Okimono of a Shi Shi Lion.  Shishi-mai is the Japanese lion dance and is one of the traditional Japanese performing arts.  Performers mimic a lion’s movements in a lion costume to festival music.  The Okimono is in very good condition with vibrant colours and horse hair main and movable ears.

Performers don lion-shaped masks and a large cloth with an arabesque lion pattern draped over their body. It is believed to have originated in India and traveled to Japan from China as a symbol of sacred beasts capable of expelling evil. In the middle of the eighth century lion dance performances were performed at shrines and temples. Between the middle of the 14th century and the beginning of the 17th century travelling entertainment groups performed the lion dance which is believed to have spread the dance to a wider audience.

Approximate dimensions are 13.5 cm height and 19 cm width and 13 cm depth.  It weighs approximately 1.896 kg.
