Chikanobu Original Triptych Noh Play
A wonderful three panel woodblock print depiction of the opening of the Kyoykan Theatre in 1881 Chikanobu (1838 – 1912). The print shows a Noh theatre performance attended by the Meiji Emperor and Empress. The royal couple sits in a pair of elegant red plush armchairs with a table of refreshments in between them, accompanied by ladies-in-waiting dressed in colorful robes.
Onstage, actors appear in the roles of the elderly couple Jo and Uba, who are the spirits of the paired pine trees, Takasago and Suminoe, in the classic Noh play Takasago. Musicians line the back of the stage.
In good condition with vibrant colours with toning and thinning in some areas (see images).
