Original 1858 Kunisada Woodblock Triptych Sayaate

$1,280.00

An excellent 1858 original Woodblock Triptych by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III).  The triptych depicts an intense and powerful confrontational scene from the Kabuki play Sayaate. Depicted on the right is Actor Nakamura Shikan as Fuwa Banemon.  On the left is Ichikawa Ichizo as Nagoya Sanza with Nakai Omiya featuring in the centre. All three prints are in very good condition and intact and show significant Mokume wood grain texture. Colour and vibrancy is very well retained expecially considering their 165 year age. The prints show only minor wear from age and storage.  This is very rare to find.

The censor’s seal on each print confirms they were printed in Ansei 5th Year June, 1858. Each print is Signed with Toyokuni’s seal, Toyokuni ga

Each print sheet size is approximately 25.6 cm width and 37.0 cm height (10 x 14.5 inches).

Intricately rendered with meticulous attention to detail, the woodblock print exudes a sense of timelessness.  It offers a portal to the past and a chance to revel in the artistry of an era long gone, yet ever present.

The Cartouche seals carry Kunisada’s signature which he used when he changed his name to Toyokuni II. He made this change despite knowing that his rival and bitter competitor Toyoshige (Hongo Toyokuni 1777-1835) was also using it.

The artistic brilliance, historical signifance, and preservation are a tangible connection to a time of creativity and cultural richness.
