1847 Toyokuni III Diptych Woodblock Prints

A rare and original, matching pair of late Edo period 1840s Toyokuni III Diptych Woodblock prints both Ooban sized.

Toyokuni III, also known as Kunisada I depicts here the Kabuki play Mukashi Gatari Ooiso no Zu.  This vibrant scene features the actor Bando Shiuka as Komurasaki at right and again as Shirai Gonpachi on the left.  The seals on both prints confirm that this diptych was printed between Kohka 4th and Kaei 5th year (1845 to 1852).

Beautifully embossed detail and vibrant colours make this woodblock diptych a striking and evocative scene.

Both prints are In very good structural condition for their significant age of over two hundred years. Showing some superficial signs of wear, grime and minor fading (please see images).

Approximate dimensions of each sheet are 36.5 cm height by 25.5 cm width.
