Nishijima uses the traditional methods of printmaking and unlike many other artists, he draws and carves and also prints each print himself. He uses a high grade paper and his works have vivid colours. Unlike many other Japanese woodblock print artists, Nishjima’s focus is on capturing the scenic views and countryside of Japan. His depictions of traditional Japan capture the beauty of its old towns and buildings and its mountains, rivers and lakes in rain, show and sunshine.
Nishijima’s woodblock prints are also available in a number of formats. His large woodblocks are usually produced in quantities of 500 which are also hand signed and titled and also numbered.
Nishijima has also produced a number of open edition woodblocks since the mid 1970s which are also hand signed and titled and undated.
Katsuyuki Nishijima was born in 1945 in Yamaguchi Province of Japan. From 1964 to 1968 he studied the art of Woodblock Prints in the studio of the Mikumo publishing house in Kyoto as well as exhibiting his work with the Kyoto independent artists and in solo displays.
