Excellent and rare 1916 to 1917 brass ashtray Trench Art commemorating The Battle of Verdun France.  Hand made by serviceman on the battle field from a 105 mm Howitzer shell casing and featuring the Verdun crest and inset with four original WWI .30 caliber bullets or projectiles.

An excellent example of original WWI Trench Art.

Dimensions are 4 inches diameter and 51 grams weight.
The Battle of Verdun is considered the greatest and lengthiest in world history. Never before or since has there been such a lengthy battle, involving so many men, situated on such a tiny piece of land. The battle, which lasted from 21 February 1916 until 19 December 1916 caused over an estimated 700,000 casualties (dead, wounded and missing). The battlefield was less than a square ten kilometres.
