Toyohara Kunichika was born on June 30 1835 in the Kyobashi district and his family name was Ōshima Yasohachi . He was a merchant as well as an artisan of Edo (present-day Tokyo).
Chikanobu referred the young Kunichika as an apprentice to the studio of the great Utagawa Kunisada.
