“Tengu” (Slayer of Vanity) literally translates as “Heaven Dog.” Japanese mythology holds that Tengu, skilled in martial arts, are more mischievous than evil and they look more like a bird than a dog. They reside in clans within the country’s mountainous interior and possess supernatural powers which they use to harass and torment humans who corrupt the Dharma (Buddhist law) by being vain and arrogant or by willfully misusing knowledge, position and authority to gain fame and/or power.
