A Noh mask of Asakura-Jo depicting an old man. The lacquered face with slightly smiling mouth shows two rows of teeth along with horse hair on the moustache, beard and eyebrows. An old man with a rustic and healthy look often used in Noh Theatre to represent fishermen and farmers.
Hand carved and gilded from a single piece of wood and most likely to be Cypress which was traditionally used for Noh and Kabuki masks. The mask is in excellent condition and is signed on the reverse. Approximate Dimensions – Mask Width 14 cm and Height 20 cm (not including beard).
