A Colour original woodblock centre panel print of a triptych attributed to Chikanobu 橋本周延 depicting Saigo Takamori mounted on horseback in a scene of battle on 4th March 1877 in the Great Kagoshima War.
Yoshi-no-suke Saigo (also known as Saigo Takamori) was a prominent Japanese samurai and military leader who played a key role in the Meiji Restoration. He was a loyal imperialist who initially assisted the Meiji government, but later became disillusioned with its policies and led the Satsuma Rebellion. The rebellion was ultimately suppressed, and Saigo is believed to have died by seppuku, a form of ritual suicide. Colours remain vibrant, however there is damage and signs of age (please see image).
Paper size: Oban is 37 cm Height and 25 cm Width
