Original 1898 Chikanobu Woodblock Beauty With Glasses
An original 1898 Woodblock print by Chikanobu titled “Beauty With Glasses”. Chikanobu has depicted a woman who is part of the cultural change in Japan to adopt a more modern lifestyle. Seated on an european style chair and wearing a ring and a hairdo that is more western in style. Her glass are an attempt to depict a modern female who is intelligent and fashionable. Chikabonu has retained traditional characteristics such as her slanted eyes. He has also used the traditional colours of ukiyo-e used in the Edo period. Unlike many late 19th century Japanese artists he was able to make the transition to update and modernize traditional Japanese art. The print appears to have water damage and smudging and is showing signs of age and wear. Regardless this print remains impressive particularly when framed.
