Old Japanese Hyottoko Wooden Mask

$930.00

A hard to find old Japanese hand carved, gilded and signed Hyottoko wooden mask. He is a comical Japanese mythical character and his mouth is puckered and skewed to one side. The origin of the name comes from “fire” and “man,” because the character is blowing fire with a bamboo pipe, hence the shape of the mouth.

The myth about Hyottoko originated in the Iwate Prefecture about a boy named Hyoutokusu. He had a bizarre face and could create gold out of his belly button.

Regarded as the god of fire in parts of Northern Japan he also plays a role in a number of traditional dances as a clown like figure and appears in a traditional dengaku dance as a clown.

Dancers wearing Hyottoko masks also appear in some Japanese local festivals. One of the most famous Hyottoko dances takes place in Miyazaki Prefecture.
