Old Japanese Furyu Mask with Signed Box
A very striking large lacquered Old Japanese Furyu Mask from the Saga region of Japan. Furyu masks have been a part of the ritual fall folk dance festivals and theature since the Muromachi period. They are used in Manburyu theatre performances which are traditional to the Saga prefecture. Carved from a single piece of Paulownia wood, skilfully lacquered in black, red and gold and estimated to be from the 1940s. Shipping with the original box which is signed “Furyu Men” and translates to Furyu Mask.
The male masks have closed mouth and this female mask has an open mouth. Hand carved from a single piece of wood and covered in red lacquer with real horse hair on his eyebrows, moustache and beard. A label bearing the maker’s mark is on back of the mask. Black lacquer highlights over his eyes and gold lacquer around his eyes. They are often used to pray for a good harvest and expel illness.
