Nobukazu Yosai Original Woodblock Oshidori Mandarin Duck

A very rare original woodblock print by Nobukazu Yosai titled Oshidori Syobu.  Renowned as a Meiji woodblock print artist for his woodblock prints depicting various war scenes this is a much rarer example of Yosai’s work.  The words in the red cartouche at the top read Iris and Lily, Flyer and Bird motif and Oshidori (Mandarin Duck).

Signed Yousai Meiji 29 July 7th which translates as 1896 July 7th in the western calendar. Also printed and published in 1896 on July 10th by printer and publisher Tsunajima Kamekichi of Nihonbashi Barokicho 2-14.

The print is in very good condition overall with some toning, good clarity and fine sharpness (see image).

Nobukazu Yosai (1872-1944)

Nobukazu was also one of Chikanobu’s best disciples.  He is also famous for his prints of the Russo-Japanese war and well as scenes of the Meiji  Emperor.  Yosai started to produce his artistic work around 1887 and also created beauty and genre paintings which are much rarer to find.
