Urushi is a delicate and skillful process of lacquering natural wood and requires many time consuming layer applications of lacquer. A skilled craftsman uses a makizutsu brush also known as a kebo brush to apply each layer and the curing process takes place over many months. Urushi lacquer first appeared during the Heian Period and grew in popularity through the Edo Period.  Highly skilled craftsmanship and young artists undergo many patient years of training to become proficient in the art of Urushi and Maki-e.
