A rare EDO Era Woodblock Print by Kuniyoshi published between 1830 and 1840 titled Sendai Gashi. A very beautiful and rare Oban tate-e polychrome Woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (歌川国芳) depicting a scene from the kabuki play ‘Sendai gashi’. The actors Onoe Kikugoro III as Nikki Danjo, with a drawn sword (left), Sawamura Sojuro V as Watanabe Mimbu, holding a fan above his head (centre), and Ichimura Uzaemon XII as Hosokawa Katsumoto, in court robes (right).

This print depicts the aclaimed actor Ichimura Uzaemon XII as Hosokawa Katsumoto, dressed in court robes in a scene from the Kabuki play ‘Sendai gashi’. This is an original right print from a complete triptych presently held in the collection of the British Museum.  Early Kuniyoshi woodblock prints are scarce, particularly ones with vibrant colour and detail.

The print is in good condition overall with signs of use and wear commensurate with it age.  A portion of the right print edge shows severe wear and some damage.

Approximate Dimensions are 36.5 cm height and 2 cm width.
