This is an early hand carved wooden Shrine Deity Jizō Bosatsu. This remarkable standing Bodhisattva Jizo is estimated to be from the late Kamakura to early Muromachi Era 12th – 13th Century AD.

The Bosatsu is skillfully hand carved from cypress wood in a single block technique (ichiboku-zukuri). Beautifully decorated with a poly chrome lacquer of gold foil (kirikane). Showing a composed and serene look his Gold highlighted Robe is articulately carved to emphasize the delicacy and fineness of the material. The representation of serenity and balance expressed by the flow and folds of his garment. In his right hand he grasps the original alarum staff (shakujō) to frighten insects away from his path and which he shakes to awaken humans from their delusions.

His left hand holds a light illuminating and wish-granting jewel (hōju no tama) signifying the bestowal of blessings. A truly remarkable work.

Bosatsu is 14.5 cm high approximately.
