From his series “Eight Views of Indoors and Outdoors” comes this large Nishiki-e beautiful woodblock print by Hiroshige titled “Night Rain and Clearing Weather”. Originally published around Bunsei 4 (1821) more than a decade before Hiroshige achieved popularity with his First Tokaido series. This is a 1970 production by the Adachi Institute with the seal of Hiroshige.
In the four print series the eight views are depicted in pairings. Two figures are depicted. A courtesan kneels before a balcony handing a long tobacco pipe to someone outside. Her coiffure is heavily decorated with an array of kanzashi hair ornaments. Her dark kimono is decorated in the lower portions with blossoming morning glories climbing up a lattice. The cartouche depicts two figures one with an umbrella in the rain and the other with a hood seated on a bench outside a latticed building.
In very good condition. Approximate dimensions 39 cm Height and 26.5 cm width

Utagawa Hiroshige was also Andō Hiroshige 1797 to 1858. Hiroshige was the last great master of the ukiyo-e. He is also best known for his landscapes and some of his works are the “One Hundred View of Edo”, “Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido” . Hiroshige also created the series “Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaido” and he is also very well known for his depictions of birds and flowers and nature prints.
