Hiroshige Woodblock Irises And White Heron

 A heron glides down to a pond filled with irises.  The plumage of the bird is white and embossed with no paint applied.  Hiroshige used a special woodblock printing technique called “Karazuri” where paper is pressed against the block with no paint, to produce an embossed effect.

Hiroshi is considered to have produced his best work between 1832 and 1836 when he was aged 36  to 40.  Among these works are his flower and bird pictures many of which are framed in a vertical rectangle. 

The woodblock print in very good condition.  Originally printed in the 1830s this is a later print from early 20th Century.

Hiroshige’s creation of Irises and a White Heron is believed to have been produced around 1833.  It depicts a heron gliding down on a pond filled with irises.  The plumage of the bird is white and embossed with no paint applied.  Hiroshige used a special woodblock printing technique called “Karazuri” where paper is pressed against the block with no paint, to produce an embossed effect.

Utagawa Hiroshige also known as  Andō Hiroshige  1797 to 1858.  Hiroshige was the last great master of the ukiyo-e tradition.

Hiroshige is famous for his landscapes as well as his depictions of birds and flowers.  He also created series such as the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido and the Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaido.
