Hasui Woodblock Zojoji Temple in Snow

Kasawa Hasui’s famous depiction of Zojoji Temple.  A dog accompanied by two people walk the snow laden temple grounds which forms  stunning contrast to the red temple.

Originally created in 1929 this woodblock print is a later production from the original woodblocks by printer Kawaguchi.   Signed Hasui with red artist’s seal “Kawase”.  This is a later edition published by Kawaguchi from the original woodblocks.

The print is also in excellent condition and has never been used or framed.

Approximate dimensions of the sheet are 41 cm width and 28 cm height.

Hasui (1883 – 1957

Hasui is best known for his athmospheric landscapes.  He created around six hundred woodblock prints and in 1953 was commissioned the print “Snow at Zozoji Temple” by the Japanese government. It was later designated as an Intangible Cultural Treasure by the government. Hasui was also declared a National Living Treasure in 1956 in recognition of his contribution and skills.
