Hasui Woodblock Print Snow at Ueno Toshogu Shrine

Hasui has captured the feeling of the Torii gates on the Island of Miyajima in this evocative winter view of the torii gate at Itsukushima Shrine at Miyajima.  Pine trees capped with snow watch over the gates as as snow falls.

Hasui’s striking depiction of the Ueno Park leading to the Toshogu shrine. A grey snow laden sky towers above a snowy landscape in stunning contrast with the red shrine.

Originally created in 1929 this woodblock print is a later production from the original woodblocks by printer Kawaguchi and signed Hasui with red artist’s seal “Kawase”.  This is a later edition published by Kawaguchi from the original woodblocks.

The print is also in excellent and as new and unused condition.

Approximate dimensions of the print are 42 cm height and 28.5 cm width.

Approximate dimensions of image are 36 cm height and 24 cm width.

Hasui (1883 – 1957)

As a recognition of his contribution and skills Hasui was also declared a National Living Treasure in 1956.
