RATING

A Bronze Clandestine Christian Horse Bell from Japan’s Edo Era. The arrival of Christian Missionaries saw some Japanese convert to Christianity in the early Edo Era (early 17th century).  As the religion was forbidden at the time by the Tokugawa Shogunate many Christian practiced in secret.  They were referred to a Kakure Kirishitan 隠れキリシタン (Hidden Christians).  The repression was lifted in 1873.  In the period leading up to 1873 many Japanese used hidden icons to symbolise their faith in Christianity.  This Bronze Horse Bell represents one of the icons used during this period.
