A vibrant Antique Saga Doll and Hawk by Ken Zan.  Depicting a young Buddha, holding a Hawk in the palm of his right hand in kneeling position. Beautifully hand carved from a single piece of what appears to be Mahogany or Cherry wood generously inlaid with Gold Maki-e and finished in layers of Urushi Lacquer. The Saga doll ships in the original Kiri wood box (see image).

Originating from Saga near Kyoto they are the oldest and most distinctive of Japanese dolls.  They portray Taoist themes with a noble and spiritual appearance.  They are believed to have originated from sculptors of Buddhist figures in the early Edo Era.

Approximate dimensions are 15.5 cm height and 11 cm width.  Approximate weight is 570 grams and 1 kg with box.
