An intricately hand carved Antique Netsuke of a Shishi Dog. A wooden ball has been masterfully hand carved to be loose to roll freely inside its mouth. Shishi Guardians are known by a many of names. In Japan they are called Komainu and in Okinawa they are known as Shīsā and represent prosperity and security.
Netsuke along with Inro and other accoutrements were very important status statements and worn daily by predominately male owners. In very good condition for its age. Edo period circa 1780 – 1840s
