Antique Bizen Bell Okina Dorei
A rare and very unusual late Edo to early Meiji era Bronze Bizen Dorei Bell. Featuring a Noh character of an Okina (old man). The Dorei are lucky bells and used in homes, temples as well as business to bring good fortune.
The approximate dimensions of bell are 8 cm length and 99 grams and total weight with box is 219 grams.
Bells have certainly had a long history in Japan. Archaeologists have discovered bells called dorei dating back to the prehistoric Jomon Era (10,000 B.C.-300 B.C.). They are also used in Shinto practice at shrines and in ritual dances to get the attention of gods and bring good fortune and protection.
