12th To 13th Century Wooden Jizō Bosatsu
Rare 12th to 13th Century wooden Cypress Shrine Diety of Jizō Bosatsu from late Kamakura to early Muromachi period.
The bodhisattva is an enlightened and compassionate being who relieves suffering of those in hell. Jizō Bosatsu is also known in Sanskrit as Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha and is carved with a single block technique called ichiboku-zukuri. He has a composed serene look and shaved head and is wearing the robes of a Buddhist monk. His right hand grasps the alarum staff (shakujō) to frighten insects away from his path which he also shakes to awaken humans from their delusions. His left hand which is missing would hold a light eluminating and wish-granting jewel (hōju no tama) and signifies the bestowal of blessings.
